Editorial photography – I regret

Dear students, If you think that the editorial photography life is so romantic and cool.. please see the pics in the gallery!

During a couple of years , while working on my own agency, we got a client of those that gives you work every single day. That was a Sport newspaper! Sports newspaper don’t really stand out for good quality in… nothing. As yesterday I posted how to do magic in bad light and environment conditions to get a nice quality shot. I’ll show you here my side B. All those pictures that I had no more option than shooting at request of the journalist «in charge».

I won’t really blame journalists for such stupid requests, some of them are friends, nice people and just want to keep their jobs. Sometimes they have just kind of a visual culture embed on their reporter brains that leads them to match the standards of Sports newspapers. Those standards are not really ruled by a person, instead they seem ruled by a deity that is a mix of the collective of football fans culture, the short term lasting time of stories and decisions made under the feeling of an underpaid job… it’s like the whole universe conspire against sport photography.

But… why?!?! Sports Illustrated is a galaxy away from this deity! The usual answer is that they are NOT Sports Illustrated… Of course media departments are not really collaborative but… do we always have to shoot a football player in casual clothes… with a ball?!!? Everybody knows he’s a football player! The usual answers are like… «no… but shoot him with a ball like he is a fortune teller with a glass ball» Please stop doing this! Worst of all is that I have fellow photographers who have tried to shoot nice portraits with quality and have received a call from their editors requesting to stop sending silly shots and to send the «real ones».

Everybody shows their glamour, I’ll strip my pride and show you the side B, some pics I regret I shot.[/wptab]
